Why You Should Go

In late summer or early fall every year, the smell of kettle corn and funnel cakes drifts through the air, the Ferris wheel lights glow against the evening sky, and families gather for one of America’s most time-honored traditions — the state or county fair. While fairs are often seen as nostalgic fun for adults, they’re also an incredible experience for children, offering excitement, education, and memories that last a lifetime. I still remember being taken to the Rose Festival fair in Portland when I was a kid.

1. A Break from Screens and Routines

In an age where so much of life happens through a screen, the fair is refreshingly real. Kids get to interact with animals, play games, and enjoy rides that spark genuine laughter and movement. It’s a full-sensory experience that reminds families how much joy can come from being outdoors together.

2. Hands-On Learning Opportunities

Fairs are packed with educational exhibits disguised as fun. From livestock barns and petting zoos to science displays and agricultural demonstrations, children see firsthand where their food comes from, how crops grow, and the care it takes to raise animals. Many fairs even offer STEM and art exhibits where kids can explore, touch, and learn by doing.

3. Building Confidence and Independence

Whether it’s entering a craft or baking contest, trying a new adrenaline pumping ride, or managing a few dollars at the midway games, the fair gives kids a chance to make decisions and test their independence in a safe, family-friendly setting. These small challenges can help build confidence and responsibility.

4. Quality Family Time

Between school, work, and daily obligations, uninterrupted family time can be hard to find. The fair offers a shared experience that everyone can enjoy together — from cheering at the pig races to splitting a giant corn dog. It’s the kind of bonding that doesn’t require planning or screens, just laughter and adventure.

5. Celebrating Local Community

Fairs are a celebration of community pride — local farmers, 4-H clubs, artists, musicians, and food vendors all come together to showcase their talents. Taking your child helps them feel connected to their hometown, understand local traditions, and appreciate the value of supporting their community.

6. Making Lasting Memories

Ask any adult, and they’ll probably have at least one cherished memory from a childhood trip to the fair — whether it was winning a stuffed animal, getting cotton candy for the first time, or riding the Ferris wheel at sunset. These are the simple, joyful moments kids remember long after the fairgrounds close for the season.

In Short

The state or county fair is more than just rides and snacks — it’s an experience that blends fun, learning, and family connection. So grab your sunscreen, your child’s hand, and a few extra tickets. The fair is calling, and it’s time to make some memories.

State Fair Planning Tips

Step 1

Plan Your Fair Visit

Check the fair’s schedule online for the hours of operation as well as the daily agenda. Then plan your day around the activities and shows you don’t want to miss. If you’re taking kids, read below on ideas to enhance the experience. If you’re on a date, see that section further down.

Step 2

Pack Essentials

Bring sunscreen, hats, sanitizer, water bottles, and snacks to keep your energy and and hydration up throughout the day. Bring some cash since some vendors don’t take cards. Comfortable shoes are a must.  Security requires outside food and drinks to be in a clear bag.

Step 3

Arrive Early

Get to the fairgrounds early to avoid crowds and have more time to enjoy the attractions. Being early can also help you get closer parking. There is a “park and ride” shuttle from the free parking lots.

Step 4

Set a Budget

Ticket prices vary based on how early you buy and the age of the person. You may also want to set  a spending limit for games, and souvenirs.

How To Get The Most For Your Family When You Attend the State Fair

Agricultural Exhibits

County fairs and state fairs offer adults and children the opportunity to learn about agriculture when you visit the exhibits showing the best of the best grown in your area. Learn about farming techniques and the things that grow best in your area. Visit booths from state and county agencies and learn how they help farmers.

Animal Exhibits

Every large fair will offer visitors the chance to see farm animals up close. There may even be the chance to pet them. Learn about how they are bread and raised. I still remember a chicken exhibit that shone a light through eggs so you could see the baby chick growing inside the shell.

The fair in your area may also have livestock shows that present the different breeds of animals. Kids can learn about the effort to raise them and care for them.

Skill Exhibits

Don’t miss the opportunity to see fine craftsmanship displays of woodworking, metalsmithing, quilting, and more. You can also like find skilled artisans offering their creations at your fair. Some even offer hands on activities for the kids. An additional educational component is to find out how these skills contribute to the local economy.

Fair Operations

Use your visit to the fair to help your young ones learn about business. Every single booth, exhibit, food cart,  and carnival ride has money coming in and money going out. How are these presenters making money? How does the fair itself make money? Can you estimate how much is earned?

How We Got Here -

The Origin of County Fairs and State Fairs

state fair ride

In the United States, county fairs can be traced back into the 1700’s. They originated as a business activity. They were a means to promote agricultural and industrial advances by providing the opportunity to display livestock, agricultural produce, and new technology.

County fairs evolved to become more than a business function. They grew into a tradition that brought communities together. These gatherings inspired competitions, and celebrations of local culture, music, food, agriculture, and creativity. These county fairs were and still are more than just events; they are vibrant gatherings where families can explore, learn, and enjoy a wide array of activities.

Local county fairs still preserve some of that community bonding and educational function. In the mid-1800’s, states got into the business of promoting and operating a “state fair”. This forever changed the dynamic of the fair experience.

State fairs were still the traditional place to showcase the “best of” a variety of categories that were grown, raised, or created in that state. But they added something more. By the late 1800’s they added on the entertainment feature.

Amusement rides, games, and food vendors became a prominent feature of the classic state fair.

This changed the attendance from a collection of primarily agricultural workers to also include “city folk”. Urban dwellers discovered a new “date night” activity and began to throng the midway to engage in the latest thrill rides and game attractions.

Today’s modern fair now combines education, cultural celebration, and carnival entertainment.

From exhilarating rides to fascinating exhibits, fairs offer something for everyone.  Agricultural business owners learn and network with others in their industry. State fairs also provide an opportunity for families to step away from their daily routines and immerse themselves in a world of fun and discovery. Whether it’s watching a magic show, participating in a craft workshop, or savoring delicious fair food, there’s no shortage of excitement.

The North Carolina State Fair significantly boosts the state economy by generating substantial revenue through ticket sales and providing a crucial marketplace for vendors, with some food vendors earning over half their annual income at the event. The fair supports vendors, promotes local agriculture and agribusiness by connecting them with consumers, and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Raleigh area, stimulating business for local hotels, restaurants, and retailers.

The North Carolina State Fair is self-supporting. It received no money from the state. Any profits are reinvesting into the fair grounds. The average attendance is about 950,00 people. This translates to millions of dollars to stimulate the local economy.
